Art & SOL Tours

For 29 years the Maier Museum of Art has provided standards-based tours for local schools. Developed in 1991 as an extension of the classroom, the Maier’s Art & SOL tour program addresses significant aspects of the Virginia Department of Education’s standards of learning objectives for visual arts, language, and social studies.

The program’s name is itself a play on the phrase “standards of learning,” indicating a strong connection to these state requirements for public school curricula. As a member of Partners in Education, a Lynchburg program that creates partnerships between the city school system and area businesses and organizations, the Maier is able to offer the Art & SOL tour program as a formal part of the elementary school curricula. Tours are led by trained docents and docent assistants who are knowledgeable and engaging.

People, Places, and Ideas in American Art (Grade 5) >

Students will discover how American artists have portrayed people, places and ideas from the 19th century through today. This tour explores how art affects us individually, and contributes to our understanding of the world.

Important Logistics Regarding School Tours:

Each school is responsible for scheduling transportation to the Maier.
Your scheduled time indicates tour-starting time.

The Maier can accommodate groups of up to 40 visitors at a time for guided tours.
However we are willing to offer multiple tour times for larger groups.

Students should be divided in to three groups before or upon arriving at the Maier.
Smaller groups helps to provide a good docent/student ratio. The groups tour simultaneously, each beginning in a different gallery.

At least one adult from your school must accompany each group.
That way our docents can focus on what they do best.

Please let us know in advance if you have any special-needs students.
We want their tour to be as meaningful as possible, and that may take a bit of extra preparation on our part.

Please wear name tags.
This helps facilitate dialogue and make each visitor feel comfortable and welcome.
