Tuition: $400 – Maier Museum of Art members at the family level or above receive a $50 discount.
Calling all high school students passionate about art, history, and culture! Join us for a week-long adventure exploring museums in and around Lynchburg. Campers will gain a deeper appreciation for the inner workings of museums and a clearer vision of how to turn their interests into a fulfilling career.
SCHEDULE
Monday, June 9
Maier Museum of Art – Experience a behind-the-scenes tour of the secret history of the museum and learn about museum education with the curator of education.
Randolph College – Explore artifacts from ancient Rome and Carthage in Randolph College’s Ancient Collection.
Tuesday, June 10
Amazement Square – Tour, including the design shop where exhibitions are built, and discussion with the president.
Lynchburg Museum System – Tour and learn about the new exhibition, Hot & Cold Wars.
Wednesday, June 11
Jones Memorial Library – Learn about special libraries from the executive director. Tour the stacks with the archivist and collections assistant for hands-on “white glove” practice with materials handling, and then work in the archival processing and digitization labs to help repair books and paper material from the collection.
Legacy Museum of African American History – Tour and discussion at the museum, then travel to downtown Lynchburg to see the Silent Witness Project.
Maier Museum of Art – Discover how to care for artwork by handling and inspecting objects in the Maier Museum of Art collection with the museum registrar.
Thursday, June 12
Daura Museum of Art at University of Lynchburg – Learn about exhibition curation, design, and installation from the museum director.
Historic Sandusky – Help with an active archaeological dig and visit the conservation lab to learn about preservation with the executive director.
Friday, June 13
Monacan Ancestral Museum – Exclusive tour and discussion with Lou Branham, Assistant Chief and Director of Museum.
Randolph College – See what Randolph College students are discovering about biofluorescence in mammals from Randolph College’s Natural History Collection.
Maier Museum of Art – Meet the museum preparator and security guard to learn how we set up and light exhibitions and how we keep the art safe.
The week ends with a showcase and reception open to friends and family!
Refund policy: To receive a refund (less a $50 fee per camper), you must cancel at least two weeks before the first day of camp. No refunds will be made during the two weeks before each camp. If the Maier Museum of Art cancels the camp, a full refund will be made.
