Collection of the Maier Museum of Art at Randolph College.

I was an art history major and was not aware of the Frieseke while I was at the College. Late summer after my graduation, I was in Lynchburg and saw President Quillan in Main Hall Lobby. We chatted and I mentioned that I had just returned from an American Painting Seminar at Bowdoin College. President Quillian, who was retiring, invited me to see the paintings in his office. The good news was that I had never had a reason to be in the President’s office prior to this time. There was this treasure, this jewel of a painting on his wall. I was overwhelmed by its beauty and light. I may have been a bit jealous that President Quillian had reserved this exquisite work for his own personal viewing. Maybe when something is hidden and then revealed the impact is more powerful. I am happy that Rest is now giving pleasure and rest to visitors to the Maier. ~Katherine “Kitty” Stark Caldwell ’74
