American artist Faith Ringgold is renowned for her “story quilts” that combine narrative paintings with quilted borders and handwritten text. Thangkas, Tibetan Buddhist paintings on cotton and silk brocade, and the African American tradition of quilt making inspired Ringgold to create this unique art form. We will explore how Ringgold challenged the art world by combining traditional craft with fine art techniques to tell powerful visual stories. Then, you will make your own miniature mixed media story quilt inspired by Faith Ringgold.
Faith Ringgold’s work is featured in the 110th Annual Exhibition of Contemporary Art, Storytellers: Faith Ringgold + Aminah Robinson, on view October 1, 2021 – April 1, 2022.
